Here's what I want to know, with rental rates still at an all time HIGH, and mortgage rates at a record low, how is it there is no balance in what we renters have to pay for a place to live? How is there no government regulation in place to control housing rates? No wonder Victoria is in such a disgusting state with it's homeless and poor.
Absolutely true, couldn't agree more! And then seems that many landlords aren't flexible either if you have pets. Why can't we have a life, have a pet and a decent place to live at a reasonable rate? I wish that you could equally give your landlord a contract for leasing that states what you expect as a tenant....I currently live in a place paying a ridiculous amount because I knew that finding a place that allowed dogs was near impossible so I took what I could get. I am probably paying near their entire mortgage. What irritates me more is that they are soooooo noisy, kids and lovemaking that go on every day and night! When I ask for them to please tame the noise at the early hours of the morning, rather than apologize, they tell me "Well, we will see what we can do." I am stuck in a lease that I am not so sure I can get out of that easily. Errrggg!
A broken lease will cost you 1/2 a month's rent...a small price to pay to be free from a place that you are compromising for. I know, I'm a landlady, and I was surprised to find out how easy it was for my tenants to break their lease. I was glad for them, because they were nice people and needed to move for work, but don't stay just because of the lease:)
To all you lording landlords out there!!! Shame! Shame! Shame! Shame on all of you who overcharge for your rental units. Taking advantage of hard working people who only want what you want: a comfortable, clean , affordable and safe place to raise their families. Victoria is one of the most unfriendly places to live. Remember this much: What goes around, comes around.
My story: I returned to Vic with child in arms last summer after having been away for 7 years (worked overseas, then pursued a degree in Ontario). In all my years of travel, I have never come across a city more appalling surrounding issues of housing - and to think all of this transpired since I departed in 2002. Like most renters (and HOMEOWNERS) in Victoria, I did not fit the perfect "quiet, single, professional, n/s, n/p, no parties, no life" profile to qualify for the quaint 'garden' (a pretty way of covering for the illegal 'dungeon') suite with no windows, no laundry, no parking, no closets, no room going for $1050/month. My 2 year old and I found ourselves facing homelessness spending 6 weeks couch surfing before almost pleading to a money inclined jerk trying to sell off his converted garage! (as in a single window, no heating, hastily installed shower stall in the corner, bar sink, bar fridge, hot plate, otherwise looking like the place where one parks one's car) for $700. One must draw the line somewhere. In the end, we 'scored' a place that was just another case of landlord exploitation. Wondering if Campbell will ever see the day where the rug gets pulled from under his highness to glimpse life on the other side.
Welcome to the blog
This is a forum for Victoria renters. Feel free to ask questions or state opinions. I've been through four hearings with the resident tenancy office, and I'm very well versed in the rules and regulations governing Victoria and it's tenants.
The purpose of this blog is to voice opinions, ask questions, and generally just provide information to those of us in the Victoria BC rental market.
If I don't have the answers you seek, I will certainly do my best to steer you in the right direction, or perhaps someone else will know what you need.
